I used Norton from 2002 and bought the upgrade until 2006, when i had to buy 2006. It really slowed my machine down, and its slow to begin with. I removed it last year, and installed McAffee. Its a bit better but still pretty slow. I think i may look into AVG. I also have Webroot installed as well and i think it is a hog as well, but not to sure. I have all the free ones still on the machine, Lavsoft Adaware etc, but for some reason not used them for a year or more. I am just assumimg the FW with McAffee works.
