The meter in the K1000 is pretty poor.  It doesn't react well in low
light, and sometimes needs a hit of bright light to get it working
properly.

A good spot meter, like the Pentax digital spotmeter, has a greater
range and is far more sensitive.  It's perfect for those hard-to-meter
situations as you've described.

Different spot meters have different ranges, but they are all far better
than what's in the K1000.  You might look at the Pentax analog spotmeter
if size isn't important. It's a little bigger than the digital meter,
but some people like that and prefer the analog display.  I have both,
and can find a use for both.
