Here's what you do:

- Press Menu, go to the last item in the Record menu named "Memory"
- Go to the last item in the Memory options "File No."
- Press left or right arrow to uncheck this option.
- Press Menu again to exit the menu functions.
- Insert a storage card to format.
- Press Menu, go to the Settings menu, second item "Format".
- Format the memory card.
- Make an exposure. The exposure will be numbered 0001.
- Re-set the Memory option to remember file numbers.

All subsequent files will be numbered in sequence from that point,
whether on the same card or not.

If the memory option to remember file numbers is turned off, the
number sequence will not be remembered and it will be incremented one
more than the last file number on the currently inserted card. If the
card is blank, it will start at 0001.
