The beach front and pier at Marina del Rey have possibilities as does the marina itself. When I was there most recently, in January, I had my Optio 555 with me but left it in the hotel room and missed a couple of evening shots of fishermen on the pier... I wouldn't take a full bag, but a single body with 16-45 or 16-50 or 20-35 could be worth it... The taxi ride to Marina would be worth it just to get to an interesting restaurant (in contrast to the plastic hotel restaurants in the Century Blvd. area). I don't recall the name, but as you walk down the main street towards the pier, on the left toward the end is a nice Italian place. On the other side of the marina (south end, other side of the inlet) there are several good places on the right side near the end of the road before the Coast Guard station. Note - this is about a two-mile walk from the old area around the pier because you have to circle inland around the whole marina area.
