Thanks for everyone who commented on this shot and hypothesized on the 
effects shown. I don't think the flare speculation works: There was no 
direct light on the lens or even the subject - it was really soft, 
indirect lighting. One thing I noticed after looking at my shots taken 
with the same equipment that don't show this effect is that they were 
all taken at much smaller apertures. This shot was taken at f/4.0, which 
is only one stop down from wide open with this lens, so I'm pretty sure 
the wide aperture contributed to the effect.

Whatever. I'm going to make a mental note of it to keep in my bag of 
tricks. I'm glad it transformed what could have been just another boring 
flower shot into something a little more interesting.
