Oddly enough, I just installed it in a test virtual machine and was
seeing how it performed with GMail when I came across your post. So
based on 10 minutes usage, it's very very snappy for most things:

 - javascript = huge boost in speed (according to tests)
 - GUI interaction (clicking on tabs, etc) snappier
 - the two things noted as a bit slower on reddit are xml/xslt
transformations and animated gifs

Besides performance, the design of the browser is aimed at security.
