The covered bridge is an interesting design. I suppose they must have
been constructed in other places but they seem (to me, anyway) to be a
real American icon. I often wonder why they were covered. Was it just
for shelter or was there some other reason? Covering doesn't seem to be

To keep the planks that comprise the roadway free of rain and falling snow,
which makes wood VERY slippery! And when the night comes, covering the planks
keeps the wetness from "looking at" the sky, and freezing so quickly.
All in all, safety.
