However, when my panos load they begin as pixelate BW then sharpen up and become color. Am I the victim of a slow server, or is it possible that I'm doing something wrong here? (I'm sure I'm doing more than one thing wrong, but help with this would be great:-).

Unfortunately, the image won't load for me. But what I think you're seeing, Paul, is the loading of what's known as a "progressive" image. When you save as JPEG, for example, in Photoshop or other "paint" programs, there'll often be an option to save as "Progressive" JPEG, and that's what I'm talking about.

The "Progressive" formats are constructed in such a way that the receiver (web browser) can start rendering something representative long before the full image arrives over the network. So very early in the transfer, the browser has enough information to give you the low-res B&W. As more image data arrives over the network, it fills in the details.

One interesting method for this is known as "quad-tree" or "oct-tree" encoding.
