Joe, I can only offer my condolences and tell you that I can easily
relate to your sense of frustration.
I should also say that DA* lenses should be fault-free within limits of
good sense and good reason.
The main question here is whether other brands suffer the same kind of
illness... Hard to tell, but there is a fair chance that Pentax is not
alone in this crime.

I have had my DA* 50-135 F2.8 about 15 months. In that time I doubt
if I have taken more than 150 images with it.
I used it yesterday and it worked fine. In fact I got a particularly
fine image with it. Then it went into my camera bag overnight. Today
I pulled it out and put it on the K20D. It won't focus--either by AF
or manually. The focus ring turns but the the scale doesn't. Same
thing when it is off the camera. It somehow broke itself overnight
sitting in my bag.
This couldn't come at a worse time. I am in Rome for a few days, and
have been finding this lens useful for several shots.
So I will have to pay Pentax to repair it. Then what can I expect?
Another 150 shots before it has to be repaired again?
Pentax, I am not amused.
Joe
