My just received DA* 50-135 did the same thing the second time I used it. Unmounting it and remounting it fixed it for a time, but I've had to do it several times in the past week. Not too cool for a just out of the box lens! It's also strange that when in that mode, the lens will not turn manually at all. That's not right. S'posed to be independent.

Anyway, I agree with Dario. It's a contact thing. Something to keep an eye on. Bit o' spit and polish on the body and lens contacts if you can do it without getting dribble on your sensor.

I have had my DA* 50-135 F2.8 about 15 months. In that time I doubt if I have taken more than 150 images with it.

I used it yesterday and it worked fine. In fact I got a particularly fine image with it. Then it went into my camera bag overnight. Today I pulled it out and put it on the K20D. It won't focus--either by AF or manually. The focus ring turns but the the scale doesn't. Same thing when it is off the camera. It somehow broke itself overnight sitting in my bag.

This couldn't come at a worse time. I am in Rome for a few days, and have been finding this lens useful for several shots.

So I will have to pay Pentax to repair it. Then what can I expect? Another 150 shots before it has to be repaired again?

Pentax, I am not amused.
