I find that the color rendition of the film is more important then the
sharpness issue. Contrast would be next.

What film were you using? Velvia zits are much nastier than Portra NC
zits.

The tiffen filters are ok. I've got the number 1 and number 3. The
number 3 is a little over the top for my taste, but the #1 is barely
discernable with neg film. 

If I did a lot of softening I'd get a Zeiss Softar.
