On 15/12/08, John Coyle, discombobulated, unleashed: >After reading this: >http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,,24798801-2703,00.html > >Amazon will never get another order from me.
This article surprises me John. I have filmed inside the Amazon building in Northamptonshire for our news programme, and although it was 2 years ago, I have reservations about what is being reported here about another depot in Bedfordshire. In my experience it seemed employees that we spoke to (randomly - not put forward by managers) were very happy there, and facilities and conditions were standard for the industry, and better than most. In fact I was so impressed by my experience that I decided I would buy from Amazon as often as I could to support the business - and that does not happen regularly with me. In the media, terms can be used in reporting which are sometimes misleading (now there's an understatement!) such as 'isolated' when referring to its location. In the UK, few places, especially in Bedfordshire are islolated! I find it difficult to believe that the depot is not served by public transport, although granted the times for shift workers at night may mean there is no service. Part of the problem is that low-paid manual workers also have a high level of absence for various reasons - other companies find this as well - notably large retail food stores. Regarding working hours, there are strict limits in the UK and I can find out what these are, but I find it difficult to believe that the hours quoted in the article are being enforced upon threat of dismissal. I'll forward the link to my newsdesk and see if they can pass it on to our sister ITV News programme that covers the area and see what they say. -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche ||=====| http://www.cottysnaps.com _____________________________ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
