But is it still auto aperture? Or do you have to do stop-down metering?

You have to set a menu item to allow aperture settings other than A. Then, when 
shooting you set the aperture and push the green button to get a shutter speed. 
Same is true, of course, for K  (SMC Pentax) lenses.
