You're essentially doing stop down metering, but pushing the button stops the lens down and sets the shutter speed. It's quite simple and becomes second nature if you shoot frequently with early, aperture lenses.

You have to set a menu item to allow aperture settings other than A. Then, when shooting you set the aperture and push the green button to get a shutter speed. Same is true, of course, for K (SMC Pentax) lenses.
