I never use the green button. I just choose the shutter speed I want
and then just take test photos adjusting the aperture till I get
a good image on the display. All in manual mode. If the aperture
is not to my liking, I then adjust the speed or ISO as needed.

Pressing the green button (or AE-L button on the *istDS/DL) stops the
lens down to the set aperture, the camera reads the light transmitted
and sets the appropriate shutter speed.  The lens then opens to full
aperture for focussing and closes down to the set aperture when when the
shutter is fully pressed.

Note that the camera has to be set on "Manual'.  If you select Av, the
camera defaults to fully open regardless of the aperture set.

I'm not sure if the K2000 operates this way, but it probably does.
