I damn near solo'd in '45 in a light plane (Piper Cub). Had a LOT of
hours dual, and was close, but...just the way it went.
I thought you flew with the USAF?

I flew when I was very young, out of a CAA/CAP (?) dirt field airport. We flew
tail-draggers, mostly. Civilians one and all, tail end of WWII.
I washed airplanes in return for rides, most of which I turned into learning
sessions. :-D
When I got old enough, I joined the Navy. Became a Corpsman ~ a surgical nurse.
Did time in Guantanamo Bay Naval Hospital, 1950 - 1953.
That was F. Batista days, pre-Castro.
When I was there, I trekked across the bay to the Naval airfield, and cadged
rides from the pilot who flew base sanitation runs with a twin-engined F7F
Grumman Tigercat, spraying kerosene and DDT to kill 'skeeters.
Got to handle the controls to and from the spray sites.
Yeah, I had fun!
