I use Photoshop 5.) on a Mac. The cursor inverts black/white as I move it across the gradient and so stays visible.

Nope, full blown PhotoShop on PC, create a work-space, make a gradient fill from black to white across the area and then move the cursor across the screen, it will disappear, a simple colour inversion can't prevent this, some simple code with a test and colour offset could. It is surprising how often the problem affects me during editing. I assume that this happens on the Mac?
