You said: "Who wants the cable release in the right hand?". Nearly everybody. The shutter release is on the right, so why would you want to use the cable release with your left hand?
When I have the camera on a tripod and move away to take the picture, I always move to the left, and my right hand is nearest to the camera. Seems typical to me.
