Wait a second. Who said 645D will use the same (shaft) AF drive as 645N? 10k$ medium format digital camera without a proper AF system would be a proper nonsense. Shaft IS a history. It's Anno Domini 2009.

But OK, let's assume, the AF systems do match and everyone's happy with historical shaft. Unfortunately there is still no easy way to reanimate FA645 lenses production as those do not fit with European RoHS and US EWRA directives (cadmium coated screws could be easily replaced, but there's too much lead (Pb) both in lenses and electronics). Pentax could officially sell 'em only in Japan. Recalculating optical formulas to match newer glass and replacing electronics components equals pretty much to new design i.e. takes both significant amount of time and money. Hoya-Pentax doesn't seem to have neither. OTOH, if they will redirect all their workforce and finances to 645D system, we'll see successor of K20D and new lenses no sooner than 2015...

(I still like the idea of 645D as technology demonstrator, but not as market product. Hopefully I'm wrong.)

Numerous great 645 lenses are already available. A new fast normal has already been announced. All that will be needed to round out the lineup is another wide angle or two. What's more, Pentax 6x7 lenses can be used with an adapter. No shortage of good glass for a 645D.

A digital medium format camera at that price would be a game-changer of "tectonic" proportions -- there's no way they'd limit it to Japan only.

There is no idea to sell about 100 cameras all over the North America
either. Professionals will never buy a camera platform that has no line of interchangeable lenses. Amateurs will never buy 10000$ toy. Rich fans are
too few in number. Life sucks...

But the 645D will have a full line of interchangeable lenses.

When? If we consider design and manufacturing cycle as it have been last years, 645D body will be outdated long before the magic rain arrives...
