Race cars also shed energy by disintegrating on impact. Most single seaters have carbon fiber "survival" capsules surrounding the driver and saloon cars or stock cars have full roll cages. Also the seatbelts in a race car allow very little freedom of movement unlike your standard family car's shoulder and lap belt.
