David,

I have had best luck by holding the button in and then using the
aperture ring kind of like a zoom ring.  As you turn it back and
forth, watch very carefully and you will see the DOF change.  It is
going to be dim when you do this, but zooming back and forth seems to
help me to see it.  Then you just stop where you want it.
