Keep the PC & put some form of Unix on it? You can test whether this would work for you by downloading a "live CD" distribution & burning a CD. Boot from the CD and you are running Linux or FreeBSD or whatever. If it does not work with your hardware, throw away the CD. This is a cheap way to find out if one of those systems might suit you. It is also a good test for hardware problems. Your board does not work with Windows. If it works with LInux & FreeBSD, the problem is almost certainly software; some virus, mis-installation, or missing driver on Windows. If it fails with Linux & BSD as well as Windows, it is very likely a hardware problem. Try cleaning the contacts, make sure the board is well seated in the slot, etc. If that does not fix it, replace the board. ubuntu.com, freebsd.org, and opensolaris.org are three I'd suggest; there are quite a few other possibilities.
