The very short version is that the Nvidia 8*** cards, among others, tend
to fail if they stay hot (= in heavy use). So I'll bet you've got a
dead-or-dying video card.
This is what I'm thinking too.
Do you have any recommendations for what's good right now? I don't want to
spend a fortune, but I realize that a good graphics card is going to cost
some coin.
