comprehensive explanation of the Nvidia "parts defect" related to
thermal issues.

The very short version is that the Nvidia 8*** cards, among others, tend
to fail if they stay hot (= in heavy use).  So I'll bet you've got a
dead-or-dying video card.

(Which is what getting Error 10 in POST would tend to indicate as well.)
