Could well be.

On the other hand, while I believe the 35 Ltd. might have some exotic
glass in it, I'd be very surprised if the 55-300 does.  So better
quality control in the glass lens elements, sure; actually different
stuff in the glass, chemically?  Doesn't seem as likely as having got
the coatings to cope better with violet light.
