Bob, the listeners would find those conversations very suspect. Why would be they listening if there was no threat? If there IS a threat and of course there IS a threat because everybody knows there IS a threat, and they can't find the damned threat it could only mean the threat is so carefull hidden they aren't finding the clues they ought - since they can't fail their cause, they will just keep listening until they find the threat. Because there IS a threat.

When I moved to Fortaleza I had no local credit. Someday I needed a suit, went into a store and they offered me credit - so I accepted. Form filled, suit chosen and packed (those days I needed no custom fit), and we wait. Then wait a little longer. Then my girlfriend and her daughter start feeling bored, so I just call the salesdummy and ask why the delay.

She comes to me with a long face, saying my credit was turned down. I say no big deal since I came to pay cash and any credit was their idea - but now I want to know why my credit was granted then refused. She goes back into the office, then returns with a patronizing smile: my phone number was not correct, she said. The manager was trying to confirm my phone number but there was no answer. I gave her my most endearing smile, my girlfriend laughed, the sleeping project of brunette woke up on my lap. Then I pointed to her - and to her manager who had stepped out to see the racket, afraid of the big, bad, turned down client - the reason they just lost a sale and some 20+ clients was very simple - we were all there, and there was no one home to answer the phone an confirm it.

Had a discussion about IP surveillance with my colleagues, and one
mentioned that Sweden actually passed a very similar bill half a year
ago. Once mentioned, I remembered the uproar here in Norway too. Most
of our internet traffic (apart from a modest line via Spitsbergen to
USA) is routed through the Swedish infrastructure. So in practice,
their new legislation states a right to eavesdrop on all traffic from
Norway to the rest of the world...

On the other hand, I can't imagine there's much to fear. :-)
