You may have had a cloud there too, it looks like
part of the background near the bottom is also
not directly lit by sunlight. That would most likely
be a cloud splitting the background lighting to
partial direct, partial shade.

Its called "open shade" which is nothing more than shooting
in shade ( no direct light from sun )on a clear sky day so blue sky is
the main light. In this case, your background is NOT in open shade,
those trees are in late day direct sunlight.

I went on a bike ride with a cow-orker yesterday. About 7PM I saw some
horses, and some pretty light on the hillside behind them.

The processing that I did was pretty basic, pretty much setting the
exposure levels and cranking in a little "fill" in lightroom.

I blew the sharpness in this photo, but I love the light. It almost
looks like one of those fake HDR photos. Other than just dumb luck, how
would I deliberately get this effect?
