Do they have police in Italy? I thought that there are no rules on
the road, so what is the point of police?

Northern Italy. I pre-booked a car with a local agency. Website
clearly stated - International Driver's Permit Required. So I got
one. Went to pick up the car. All they were interested in was my
credit card. I tried showing my U.S. license, my International
Permit. They didn't care. YMMV.

We are planning a holiday in Italy at the end of the month.
We would like to rent a car while we are there; but some of the
guidebooks say we "may need" International Drivers' Permits. This
surprises us, because we have rented in the UK, France, and
Germany
with only our U.S. licenses.
So, have non-EU people here rented cars in Italy without IDPs?
What rental company did they use?
Many thanks for any information.
