He's also a fer'ner, and Amtrak (which is subsidized with my tax
money) has a rail pass and some special pricing for foreign tourists
that are not available to us locals. Go figure. If I were from
Europe traveling by train in the US would be great.

Actually the special pricing is available to anyone. You don't have to be a "fer'ner".

It used to be possible to buy a 15 day Amtrak USA rail pass allowing unlimited travel, but that's gone by the way.

Now it's a 15 day/8 "segment" (or 30 day/12 segment, or 45 day/18 segment) pass. If I understand it, any interruption in the journey counts as a segment.

If you take the train from NYC to New Orleans and stay on for the whole journey, that's one "segment", but if you got off in Charlotte, NC and picked up on the same train the next day, it's two "segments".

And if you have to change trains, that counts as two "segments" - NYC to Chicago = one segment, Chicago to LA = one segment.

If you want a sleeper, you have to pay a surcharge in addition to the rail pass fare.
