I would disagree with this. The difference between SMC and Supertaks is
Nearly nil with these low element long telephotos. It doesn’t
practically matter. The
Later Pentax tele lenses like the SMC-A* 300/4 blow away the earlier
SMCK 300/4
Or takumar 300/4 lenses on CA elimination due to a much improved optical
design, nothing
To do with coatings at all...

>From what I recall, and it's kinda sketchy, the takumar 300/4 and
500/4.5
Both have fairly visible CA on APS digital, the 400/5.6 is better in
that
Regard. The A*300 is much better than the ST/SMCT/SMCK 300/4 with
respect
To CA elimination. Its way smaller too. If you can afford the A*300/4
For roughly $500-700 in nice shape, I would recommend that one very
heavily, but the others
Are going to need CA correction in post processing to get good results,
Except maybe the 400/5.6 screwmounts may be OK, I just don’t recall how
Good the 400 is other than its better than the 300 and 500mm screwmounts

On CA. The M*300/4 should be as good as the a* version too, it just
don’t
Support AE (no "A" setting on the aperture setting ring).

Tim,
I think with the SMC coatings, they are virtually indistingushable from
the A series lenses, maybe even the FA's. Without the SMC coatings, get
a good lens hood! The SMC is best for reducing flare in backlighting.
I think the Super Takumars are the series before the SMC Takumars.
