Because, in the real world, most people use IE. And if you have a web site that's in any way connected to your financial wellbeing you'd better be sure it works well in the browser that most of your prospective customer base use. My day job is working with software that has to work well on IE, and has to work acceptably on the other mainstream browsers. That pretty much dictates my using IE as my default browser. Sure, I've got Firefox installed as well.
