Welcome to the inevitable backlash from the manufacturers over cheap,
out-of-spec batteries. The batteries are causing warranty claims due
to their lack of functional therman protection circuits so the
manufacturers program the cameras to not accept them.

Panasonic isn't the first to do this (Nikon was with the D200 and the
EN-EL3e battery which included extra circuitry to identify itself to
the camera), but the first to openly state the primary reason for it,
the secondary reason being to increase accessory sales.
