In Pentax's case I doubt they're hurting local dealers, the number of local dealers that carry Pentax around here can be counted on the fingers of /none/ hand...

Why would they do that?, that would scare
away potential buyers from even putting
them in their shopping carts in the first
place, no?

Seems Adorama is showing something close to list prices on their web page now. Add an item to the shopping cart to see the real selling
price.

Back when it was all still 800 numbers and mail-order, the U.S. had some kind of "fair trade" laws that supposedly prevented big mail-order retailers from advertising prices below MSRP, so they wouldn't undercut local merchants.

It actually benefited manufacturers more than local merchants.

I wonder if camera manufacturers are putting pressure on the big internet dealers because their prices are again hurting local dealers, which in turn would ultimately cost the manufacturers.

The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or
drinking; he can ruin himself with gambling. If he does he is certainly a damn
fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a
free man any more than a dog.
