Actually, it doesn't matter anymore, as you've flashed so much testing
the unit is now out of warranty.

I can't run that test just now on my two 540 units, but I will later
today if I don't get sidetracked.
Either a faulty flash, or, as others have alluded, poor flash
management firmware on either the camera or flash.
As a stretch of thought, it could be that the zoom of a lens must
match the zoom of the flash, and the 77 or any prime could throw it off.
