I have zero experience with dedicated flash units, but that looks generally a bit erratic, not just the part where the 48mm setting fries the subject with excessive photons. So either the flash has a problem at 48 (quench speed, just plain too much omph, etc.) or the camera is asking for more than it needs for some reason. Have you tried this with a different lens?
