Since so much gear was stolen out of my Dodge, I've resorted to a method I picked up from Chuck the Peddler 13 years ago. Chuck had to fly around the west coast with two or three tables full of used camera gear, hitting all the "Swap Meets" and "Camera Shows". He packed all the photo gear in between 2 and 6 huge wheeled plastic Igloo coolers, tapeing them shut and belting them for security.

So now when I need to leave some gear in the car for a few days, it is packed in camera case foam in two not as large, but big, coolers. No tape, no belts, but sitting in the back like I was heading out to tube a river or something.

Once I get where I'm going, the cat's out of the bag as soon as I access the stuff, but no more so than having camera cases.

My soon to be done project is to bolt the larger cooler to the floor of the van, and put a lockable hasp on the hard to see side, just in case. The smaller one will hold my photo backpack or a large Tamrac bag plus a small one. Slingbag will be used to carry stuff away from the car to shoot. When home, the smaller cooler will lay on it's side, opened, to see it is empty. A sweater will hide the hasp on the larger cooler. A sleeping bag will complete the ruse.

I'm sure the Domke is a great bag but it's also bigger and more expensive. I was trying to show an alternative in the same size/ price range.

And frankly, nothing beats my Pelican 1600 series!

That's what I used when I was schlepping stuff around the country
to various racetracks - the 1650 is large enough for the big glass,
and tough enough to look after everything in checked baggage.

Nowadays I normally just throw my 1510 in the trunk of the car.
I can't get the big stuff in it, but it holds two bodies (each with
a battery grip), the 80-200, 28-105, 16-50, 10-17 and a 50mm, plus
a couple of flashes, and miscellaneous stuff (batteries, TCs, extra
memory cards, etc., etc.). I still haven't worked out how to fit
the 50-135 in as well, though.

I couldn't remember most of what I know today
if it weren't for others sharing their knowledge
of my past on the Internet. Thank you…
