I use mine the same way. It'll stay in the truck and I can get to stuff that I wouldn't normally lug with me. But, I have been known to work out of it from time to time including on-location. Most recently was when I took it with me to a shoot outside Death Valley. I have the older version of this case so the wheels are not as nice and the latches are near impossible to open without using a special plastic tool that came with the case on its own lanyard. But, I don't mind the one-piece latches as they make it very hard to tamper with.
The bitch with checking this case on an aircraft is that the TSA will open it every time just because of the way it looks. So, a pre-inspection, if you can schedule one is a good idea. I took it to Hawaii once and the TSA guys unscrewed the pressure relief valve and left it off (they put it in the case). So, upon landing I found that the case had been subjected to freezing temps in the cargo hold and a couple of lenses had developed slight condensation, which went away once out of the case. Frickin' idiots. ----- Original Message ---- > From: John Francis <[email protected]> > To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List <[email protected]> > Sent: Wednesday, July 15, 2009 9:41:16 AM > Subject: Re: Bag Dilemma - solved > > On Wed, Jul 15, 2009 at 08:10:38AM -0700, Brendan MacRae wrote: > > I'm sure the Domke is a great bag but it's also bigger and more expensive. > > I > was trying to show an alternative in the same size/price range. > > > > And frankly, nothing beats my Pelican 1600 series! > > > > > > http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1650 > > That's what I used when I was schlepping stuff around the country > to various racetracks - the 1650 is large enough for the big glass, > and tough enough to look after everything in checked baggage. > > Nowadays I normally just throw my 1510 in the trunk of the car. > I can't get the big stuff in it, but it holds two bodies (each with > a battery grip), the 80-200, 28-105, 16-50, 10-17 and a 50mm, plus > a couple of flashes, and miscellaneous stuff (batteries, TCs, extra > memory cards, etc., etc.).
