It was actually worse than that. Many places didn't bother recording
live births until the child had survived infancy.

If he lived to become a blacksmith, he'd survived childhood.
That's pretty much it, and it fits in with a discussion a short while
back about how statisitcs aren't necessarily to be believed.
What has happened over the past century or so is that childhood
mortality rates have fallen tremendously (thank modern medicine for
that), not that our lifespan has increased significantly.
