Actually I should correct that, it was act Arnold's /Grandfather/,
Governor Benedict Arnold who supposedly built the tower as a windmill.
At least he referred to a windmill in his will, and that has been taken
to mean the Newport Tower There is however some evidence that the
building isn't that windmill. While quite similar in general design to
a windmill near Chesterton in England, you would be hard pressed to set
the Newport Tower up the same way, as it is nearly a foot out of round.
This would make a revolving platform, for the sales to be turned to
face the wind, most difficult to build. There were a number of
windmills in the area but all of them were made of wood.

That's about as straight as it's going to get. Nothing it the image is
exactly square to anything. Whether or not the tower was actually built
by Vikings or by Benidict Arnold's father, it's had at least 300 years
to settle. I was crouched down to make the image between the bars of
the iron fence and was listing a bit myself. The lamp post visible
through the right hand arch is perpendicular.

K. Yeah, hard when they didn't build straight.
That's a very odd choice, Vikings and Benidict Arnold's father. Doesn't
compute. Heh.
