Actually I should correct that, it was act Arnold's /Grandfather/, Governor Benedict Arnold who supposedly built the tower as a windmill. At least he referred to a windmill in his will, and that has been taken to mean the Newport Tower There is however some evidence that the building isn't that windmill. While quite similar in general design to a windmill near Chesterton in England, you would be hard pressed to set the Newport Tower up the same way, as it is nearly a foot out of round. This would make a revolving platform, for the sales to be turned to face the wind, most difficult to build. There were a number of windmills in the area but all of them were made of wood.
