Newsweek's crop is unethical. Most news sources wouldn't allow it. It changed the message of the photo. At the NY Times, minor cropping for clarity is okay, but almost all photo alteration is strictly prohibited.

In fine art photography, anything goes. The photographer is free to use all the tools at his or her command to present a personal vision. If a photographer chooses to practice fine art photography in a realistic, journalistic fashion, that's okay as well.

In the world of art, all doors must remain open. In reporting news, truth is the absolute standard.
