The mirror-pre-fire vs. mirror-lock-up is one of the perennial debates.
As a landscape guy, I personally side with Pl most of the time; not having
to have a cable release is much more useful to me and makes this "automatic"
mirror lock-up convenient in more situations than manual mirror lock-up
(because I so often get caught out without a cable release handy). That
said, the original poster's example of shooting plants in the wild and having
to wait for a momentary lull in the wind to get the shot is a good example
(the only real example I ever encounter) of a situation in which you need
a manual mirror lock-up. For me, this only accounts for perhaps 10% of the
mirror lock-up shooting I do, so I find mirror pre-fire better 90% of the
time and manual lock-up better 10% of the time. If you're a big time flower
photographer, your ratios will be reversed.
Perhaps some day there'll be a Pentax with both options. Until then I'm
glad my MZ-S and PZ-1p have the auto pre-fire version of mirror lock-up
for 90% of my shooting (and I'm glad I have a K2 for the other 10%).
