A great deal of the problems with Outlook such as this can be avoided by making sure you run Windows update regularly and apply all the security patches. the fact that many people dont do so helps MS get a bad reputation for email virus problems. I also use outlook, and although I receive at least one virus bearing email per day (I do a webmaster role as part of my work), I have, so far, never had an infection even from the likes of Goner when it first appeared.

True, but email programs that render HTML and, especially, those that run JavaScript, are *vastly* more vulnerable than those that just show plain text. With a text-only email client "real life" security is much better because the default installation (what most people end up with in the real world) is safer: You have to deliberately save and run an attachment to get hit. I once did a demonstration for a friend at work in which I sent him an email that crashed his PC when he opened it; no file attachments necessary - just HTML and JavaScript and *any* HTML/JavaScript email client would do it. With a little work Microsoft OutHouse *can* be made much more secure that its default installation, although you can't defeat image loading (to stop web bugs in email) in any version that I've had to work with. -- Mark Roberts www.robertstech.com - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
