As it seems that "flash synch disabled above X-synch speeds" is more
than a Pentax only situation, the ball must be in Jobo's court to find
a solution. How about they work with the relevant companies on
firmware patches? But that's not likely because I reckon they'd just
get stonewalled by the companies, being a third party
supplier/competitor.

Pressing the "hint" button seems the simplest fix, but the disruption
of attention to shooting would drive me crazy. Isn't there any other
connection/outlet where a camera provides an impulse coincident with
exposure? Perfect X-synch isn't essential, just any impulse or
circuit closure that is repeatably and predictably close to exposure
that could be used to kludge a relay, and that could be accessed
without "doing a Cotty" on your cameras. A battery pack connection or
a usb port for instance.

But to me, the ideal solution, which Jobo should have investigated and
followed, would have been to make the GPS unit in an SCA-3xxx version
that could spoof the camera into believing it was mounted with a high
speed flash. Someone with some electronic nous could even kludge up a
homebrew "magic box" on an SCA-3xxx module to generate a dummy X-synch
where the camera refuses to provide one in the absence of an actual
high speed flashgun.

A second best but much simpler solution would be a "soft shutter
release" style extended shutter button, over the camera's original
shutter button, that had a set of contacts inside and a PC flash
outlet connected to a remote hotshoe. You'd get some false GPS fixes
where photos are considered then not actually taken, but it would
eliminate the need to seperately press the "hint" button. This
solution would need to synch on "button up" to avoid electronic
disturbance from camera to GPS.

OK then, the ideas are out there if anyone cares to run with them.

regards, Anthony
