R2400 here:
I change ink cartridges when the printer stops printing. If two more
than the one that stopped the printer are flashing, I change both of
them at the same time as well as the dead one. If it's only one, I
risk it and change only the dead one.

The reasoning behind this:

Given that ink carts are $13@ and the amount of ink I'd lose by
changing a cart when it just starts flashing vs when the printer stops
entirely is essentially a $1.30 expense (10%). The initiate/purge
cycle consumes less than 5% or a max of $0.65. The initiate/purge
cycle will often consume all the remaining ink in a cartridge that has
already been flashing. If this happens and I need to stop the printer
to change out another cartridge more than twice, I'm wasting less ink
to replace all flashers in one go.
