Not sure I follow what you mean by your question - I don't understand your mail reading "workflow." FWIW, I have several folders set up in Mac Mail. I use a sort filter to put all GESO and PESO tagged emails into one folder, all other email from PDML into another folder. I read the PDML folder with messages sorted by Date Received. When I find a thread I want to follow, I change to a sort by Subject. If I read-and- delete all in a thread, then switch back to Date Received order, it does not take me back to where I was, but then it is a simple scroll to get to the bottom, the most recent messages, and resume reading linearly or by selecting another topic and going back to Subject.

I've been using mutt as my primary mail reader for 15 years, before that it was elm. I'm used to the convenience of text based mail clients which had different search functions for going to the next email which matches a criteria, and limiting the emails shown to those that match a pattern.

When the mail server was moved to one that I can't log into quite as easily, I started using the mac mail client. It isn't nearly as intuitive as the text based programs and Mac help varies from bad to counterproductive. I don't want to only show messages that match a search pattern, I just want to go to the next message that matches a search pattern, but I can't figure out how to do that on mac.

This list has so much traffic, I often only have time to follow threads that I'm already actively taking part in, so I'll search for my name, then scan the thread. But if I search for my name, go to the email with it, then empty the search string, then I lose the marking of where I am. Is there a mail client on the mac that'll let me do this?
