They did. After Apple went for Microsoft, Xerox went for Apple. I think they
settled out of court.

The one that surprises me is the Perq. I'd completely forgotten about it,
but it was marketed by ICL a long time ago and I seem to remember seeing one
back in the early 80s, even before I'd seen GEM on a PC. ICL wrote briliant
operating systems.

Most of the later GUIs are just window managers on top of X - very important
piece of software.
