Bob Shell was convicted of 8 charges; 7 felonies in addition to the involuntary manslaughter conviction. He faced a possible minimum of 6 years and maximum of 131 years.
I can list off any number of people who have been convicted of crimes who were later found to be innocent. I suspect that Biblebelt interpretation if his pictures had more to do with how they were viewed than anything else, and this still doesn't take into account the apparent tampering with evidence that the police did. The judge also, for whatever reason, decided to sentence him on the high side of the scale and give consecutive sentences to ensure that Bob got a life sentence when the norm would be to give concurrent sentences on the low side of the scale. I suspect if Bob had been living anywhere other than where the Christian version of Sharia law holds sway he would probably have gooten a few months for posession of morphine. I suspect he is being punished more for the small time local's distaste for the small % of his work that was of an erotic nature as for anything he might have done wrong.
