we used to fly in and out of there for school holidays when my father was
stationed there in the late 60s. At the time the border with Spain was
closed and planes had to make a weird manoeuvre to avoid Spanish airspace
when taking off and landing. 

There were hardly any cars on the road back then - nowhere to go beyond the
airport when the border was closed - but a steady stream of RAF personnel
cycling around in their uniforms on their big old-fashioned sit-up-and-beg
boneshakers.
