Larry,
Well, I tend to be on 80 M (3.5 MHz), 40M (7.0 MHz), and 20M (14.0
MHz).using either code or sideband. I do have 2 M (144.0) transceiver in
the car for chats on FM through several of the local repeaters. Since
you have been gone, the morse code requirement has been dropped and
there are only 3 license classes, Tech, General & Extra. The tech
license gets you on the 2 M and down to a piece of 10 M (28.0 MHz). The
other two give you access to at least a piece of all the bands with
sections reserved for the Extra license. If you have more questions, I
am happy to answer them but we outta take off forum to spare the others,
chatter about another consuming hobby.

Frank,
It didn't miss...It/they (that a clump of 3 three trees) blew out
the window in the end, hit the top of my chimney, and tore out and
chewed up the rail on the end of the porch, as well as the concrete
holding it up.. My ham radio vertical is now closer to a modern
aluminum sculpture.
Time to invest in a slinky dipole.
Funny you should say that. I have a dipole (actually a G5RV) up 45
ft in some neighboring trees. It is fine. So I still have
communications.
What bands do you hang out on? I never got my license, could never
get my code past about 3wpm by the time I was done visiting grampa
(W6HJL, also member of the society of wireless pioneers), and couldn't
get my folks to practice code with me to get past the 5wpm hump. In
the meantime not only did the internet and cell phones pretty much
cover most of the non-emergency uses of ham radio, but I've got too
many other expensive hobbies consuming my time.
The wind sounded as though we were living underneath a railroad for
about an hour.
But we are still here and just waiting for the adjuster. Then I
can schedule the tree guy. So what is a guy to do....other that
take photographs....sigh???
There are easier ways to branch out to new photographic subjects.
I would rather leaf the whole subject alone.
If we get good light today, I want to get some pictures of the
rootballs. I need to get to the bottom of it!
I look forward to your incipient "Trunk and disorderly" PESO.
