The reality is, if Dief hadn't dismantled the Arrow program voluntarily, we
would have had a regime change up here and the Arrow would have been taken
by force.
The Arrow scared the living hell out of Eisenhower and his Cold War
paranoids in the Pentagon.
Nice myth.
The Avro Arrow was designed to intercept and kill fleets of high flying
Soviet bombers. Except that the Soviets wouldn't oblige by building
those fleets of high flying bombers.
The Arrow was a solution to a problem that didn't exist.
Reality is Canada couldn't afford to build it on their own. Canada
couldn't buy enough of them to make the unit cost affordable. For the
project to succeed, the USAF had to buy them ... which they wouldn't,
since they already had the F-102 & F-106 in inventory, with the F-4
Phantom II under development.
Great plane, great engineering, but it wasn't needed and it wasn't
economically viable, and THAT is why the Canadian government killed it.
